Through Project NextGen and Project RebCell, in partnership with The Electrochemical Society - University of the Philippines Student Chapter, the event aimed to expand knowledge and promote innovation in the country’s battery research field.

Day 1: Opening and First Day of Lectures

The first day of the Battery Summer School was marked by a warm welcome from the Dean of the College of Engineering, Prof. Maria Antonia Tanchuling, followed by opening remarks from Dr. Lawrence Limjuco, Project Technica l Specialist of Project NextGen. The morning session featured enlightening talks from Assoc. Prof. Julie Anne Del Rosario-Paraggua (UPD - DChE), Engr. Prince Elmer Reyes (Philippine Batteries Inc.), and Dr. Ryan Corpuz (Nanolabs LRC Co. Ltd.)In the afternoon, participants benefited from insightful presentations by Dr. Lyn Marie De Juan-Corpuz (Nanolabs LRC Co. Ltd.), Dr. Maricor Divinagracia-Luzadas (Nascent Batteries), Dr. DJDonn Matienzo (Nascent Batteries), and Prof. Lew Andrew Tria (UPD-EEEI). The day concluded with an insightful Q&A session and engaging interactions with sponsors at their booths.

Day 2: Second Day of Lectures and ABC Lab Tour

The second day continued the momentum with a series of presentations from leading industry experts. In the morning, Engr. Juris Sadornas (Aboitiz Power), Dr. Darren H.S. Tan (UNIGRID Battery), and Dr. Lawrence Limjuco (NextGen Project, ABC PH) shared their latest research and developments. The afternoon featured talks from Asst. Prof. Michael Castro, Asst. Prof. Jan Goran Tomacruz, and Assoc. Prof. Jhud Mikhail Aberilla, all from UPD DChE.

Participants also had the opportunity to engage in a poster session, networking with fellow battery enthusiasts, and participate in a raffle draw with exciting prizes. The day concluded with insightful closing remarks from Prof. Joey D. Ocon, wrapping up the lecture series and preparing attendees for the hands-on workshops to follow.

Another highlight of the day was the lab tour at the Advanced Batteries Center. Participants were given an in-depth look at the state-of-the-art equipment used for battery research and development, providing them with a tangible understanding of the processes and technologies involved in creating advanced battery systems.

Day 3: Hands-On Laboratory Workshops Begin

The workshop segment of Battery Summer School 2024 had 15 participants from diverse institutions and industries. The attendees engaged in synthesizing battery electrode materials and fabricating electrodes using the pasting method, the doctor blade method, and the electrodeposition method. This hands-on experience provided valuable practical knowledge, complementing the theoretical insights gained during the lecture series.

Day 4: Battery Assembly and Characterization

On the fourth day, participants assembled coin cell batteries, operated the battery cycler, and explored electrochemical characterization techniques for half-cell tests. They also learned about various material characterization techniques, learning how to analyze and understand the properties of different electrode materials. This day of intensive learning equipped participants with essential skills for future research and development in battery technology.

Day 5: Workshop Culmination

The final day of the Battery Summer School 2024 was a culmination of the week's activities. Participants completed the last hands-on lab sessions, followed by a culmination activity where they shared their learnings. The event concluded with a celebratory dinner attended by participants and organizers, fostering camaraderie and collaboration among the attendees.

Battery Summer School 2024 was a resounding success, equipping participants with knowledge and insights throughout the event. As the workshop concludes, attendees are expected to apply their newfound knowledge to their respective fields, contributing to the advancement of the renewable energy landscape in the country.

This event was made possible by the efforts of the Advanced Batteries Center Philippines, Project NextGen, Project RebCell, The Electrochemical Society - University of the Philippines Student Chapter, and the Laboratory of Electrochemical Engineering - UPD. Special thanks to all the speakers, participants, and sponsors for their invaluable contributions.

LEE research staff and graduate students participated in an in-house training and workshop on the Python for Power Systems Analysis (PyPSA) toolbox on October 9 and 23, 2024 . The sessions were led by Arizeo Salac (SRS 1, ElectriPHI), who returned from a six-month research sandwich program at the Reiner Lemoine Institute in Berlin, Germany , where he focused on data-driven decision-making and energy systems modeling. The training included a detailed discussion on energy systems modeling, with key topics such as data sources and the representation of energy systems using both conventional and renewable technologies. Participants received hands-on assistance with the software setup and installation, followed by simulation activities that showcased PyPSA’s capabilities in energy and power systems analysis. Mr. Salac also presented his baseline model of the Philippine energy system, which can be utilized for energy transition scenario planning. The event aimed to enhance participants' proficiency with open-source modeling tools, share best practices in modeling, and support their research in energy systems. Article by: Sophia Lunor

Prof. Joey D. Ocon, Dr. Julie Anne D.R. Paraggua, Dr. Lawrence Limjuco, and Giancarlo Sanglay were among the Filipino delegates at the 2nd ASEAN Battery Technology Conference , held from August 21 to 23, 2024 , at the Shangri-La Rasa Sentosa in Singapore. Themed "Powering ASEAN: Innovating the Future of Battery," the event was co-organized by key ASEAN associations from Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. They were accompanied by LEE member and graduate student, Giancarlo Sanglay and NextGen Project Chief Technical Specialist, Dr. Lawrence Limjuco, of the Advanced Batteries Center. The conference aimed to foster connections among researchers, engineers, and industry stakeholders within the battery and electric vehicle (EV) sectors. It provided a platform for knowledge exchange, technical discussions, and potential collaborations. Key topics included the development of the Battery and EV Roadmap for Southeast Asia, as well as government policies and regulations surrounding battery and energy storage systems (ESS) applications. Industry leaders and academic experts also addressed technological advancements in battery materials, financial support for innovations, and strategies for managing the end-of-life value chain of batteries. Prof. Ocon, who also serves as Co-Founder of Nascent Batteries, played an active role in the event by moderating a panel discussion on advancing ESS technologies in Asia. The panel featured representatives from prominent organizations, including EDP Renewables APAC, Green Tenaga Pte Ltd, and the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand. This collaborative event underscored the region's commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions and highlighted the critical role of ASEAN countries in driving innovation within the battery and EV industries. The Laboratory of Electrochemical Engineering (LEE) held a despedida party to bid farewell to two of its active members — Ms. Rosela Lazaro and Asst. Prof. Michael Castro — as they embark on a new chapter of their academic journey. The LEE members, along with their laboratory head, Prof. Joey D. Ocon, celebrated through a friendly competition at the Ever Gotesco Bowling Alley, Commonwealth Avenue last August 19, 2024. This also fostered camaraderie and strengthened the bond and friendship between the lab members. Ms. Lazaro will be studying MS in Environmental Science and Engineering at Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, South Korea. Meanwhile, Asst. Prof. Castro will be pursuing a doctorate degree in Nuclear Engineering and Management at the University of Tokyo, Japan. He will be returning to UP Diliman to tend to his duties at the Department of Chemical Engineering. Indeed, ‘goodbyes’ are not the end. It marks a beginning of a new ‘hello’, a step closer to making dreams come true. To Sir Michael, ganbatte! To Sela, hwaiting! We are all rooting for you both! Article by: Lora Monique Sapanta
