Prof. Joey D. Ocon and LEE graduate students hosted Prof. Yoshitada Morikawa for a short visit and tour at the UP Diliman campus to discuss research collaboration on “virtual microscopy” of nanoscale materials using quantum-chemical calculations. Prof. Morikawa is a Professor at the Department of Precision Science and Technology in Osaka University and is an expert on computational materials design such as the use on density functional theory (DFT) to understand gas-solid interfaces for various applications (e.g. fuel cells, heterogeneous catalysis). Prof. Morikawa is currently in the Philippines to lecture at the Computational Materials Design Workshop at De La Salle University Manila. Ms. Beatriz Tan (LEE BS’ 18) is applying for the PhD program at Osaka University as a Monbugakusho scholar. Meanwhile, Goran Tomacruz, who is an undergraduate member at LEE, stayed at Osaka University for two weeks as part of the Sakura Program. Engr. Wilbert James Futalan (MS student) is also currently at Osaka University for a one-year fellowship under the QEDC program.
